Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the most important plastics of all.

PET has rather moderate electrical insulating properties. It is also polar and resistant to diluted acids, oils, alcohols, fats and aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. However, the material is susceptible to halogenated hydrocarbons and ketones. It is also unstable to hot water and alkalis, as PET is chemically an ester.

Due to its relatively low permeability to oxygen and carbon dioxide, the material is mainly used in the production of packaging such as PET beverage bottles.
