POM - Polyoxymethylene

Polyoxymethylene (POM) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic and is characterized by excellent mechanical properties. POM has a high tensile strength and impact strength. In addition, polyoxymethylene (POM) has a high elongation at break and very low water absorption.

Due to its high crystallinity, the plastic POM has excellent resistance to numerous chemicals. For example, diluted acids, diluted alkalis, as well as aromatic, aliphatic and halogenated hydrocarbons. In addition, it is resistant to oils and alcohols. The material polyoxymethylene (POM) is not resistant to concentrated acids and hydrofluoric acid as well as oxidizing agents. Polyoxymethylene has a high resilience, is also insensitive to stress cracking and has excellent machinability.

Due to its excellent machinability with low chip formation, POM is an extremely popular plastic for the production of dimensionally stable consruction and sliding parts.

The most important areas of application are the automotive industry and electrical engineering, followed by general equipment and mechanical engineering and the consumer goods sector.

Other areas of application for polyoxymethylene (POM):

  • Mechanical engineering
  • Food industry
  • Textile Industry
  • Automotive industry
  • Medical Technology
  • Packaging industry
  • Building and furniture industry

Polyoxymethylene is used in the construction of parts with particularly high demands on dimensional stability and appearance. For example, seals, control discs, impellers, snap-on elements, coupling parts, flanges, piston rings, luer parts, gear wheels, gear parts, pump elements, coil formers, housings, valve bodies, bearings for clockworks, Precision parts for telephone sets, radio, television, sound reproduction and fax machines, spray cans, gas fire tanks, gas ampoules, fittings, hinges, lock parts, door and window handles, garden hoses, hooks, zippers, ski binding parts and much more.

The thermoplastic POM polyoxymethylene can be used in continuous use at temperatures from -40 to +100 °C without any problems. Short-term up to 120 °C. POM material can be processed excellently. The primary processing of POM is injection moulding. Especially in micro-precision, which is suitable for the production of very tightly toleranced dimensionally stable small parts, even for dimensions below 2 mm.

Further processing possibilities of polyoxymethylene:

  • Extrusion
  • Blow moulding
  • Welding

In addition, POM is very easy to machine and is therefore ideal for turning and milling parts made of POM in individual and series production.

Due to the low surface energy, polyoxymethylene can only be bonded to a limited extent without special surface treatment. By oxidizing the surface, the adhesion for adhesives can be optimized.

Further information on the various processing options can be found under our processing instructions for polyoxymethylene (POM).
